Ryan Gustin Penn State
Student at Penn State University
Born November 8, 2002, in Rochester, New York, Ryan Gustin fervently advocates engineering, leadership, and community engagement. From his beginnings in Penfield, NY, Ryan Gustin Penn State has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to service and innovation throughout his academic and personal life.
Educational Journey
His academic voyage started at Plank Road North Elementary in Webster, NY, where he attended from first through fifth grades. During this period, he actively participated in football, basketball, and baseball. His passion for technology also began to surface, mainly through his involvement in Lego robotics, which provided an early foundation for his engineering interests.
Years of Growth at McQuaid Jesuit
He advanced his education at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, where he deeply absorbed the school's ethos of forming "men for others." He led the McQuaid IgKnighters Robotics Team, focusing mainly on the robot's climbing mechanism. His leadership and technical skills were evident when the team's 125 lbs. robot successfully climbed and positioned itself and two others on a three-foot-high platform, earning them an "Excellence in Engineering" award.
At McQuaid, he also gained valuable experience working with the school's CNC Mill, transforming digital designs into physical parts made of aluminum and steel. He applied his CAD skills to enhance the functionality of their robots, which complemented his involvement in the school's stage crew, where he managed complex technical aspects of theatrical productions.
Service to Community
Throughout his youth, he has been actively involved in his community. He contributed to the House of Mercy Homeless Shelter, where he helped distribute gifts during the holiday season to those less fortunate. His participation in the St. Joseph of Arimathea Pallbearer Ministry further showcased his compassion, as he supported individuals who lacked extensive family networks.
He also dedicated more than 170 hours at Maplewood Nursing Home, where he built enduring relationships with older people and appreciated the significance of intergenerational ties. His consistent volunteer work at the Webster Fireman's Carnival supported local firefighters and reinforced community spirit.
Professional Development
At Oak Hill Country Club, he worked in various capacities, including managing golf carts, the bag room, and the driving range. His role during the 2023 PGA Championship gave him a comprehensive understanding of the logistics involved in large-scale event management. He also worked at Hedges Nine Mile Point Restaurant, where he excelled in a fast-paced environment and was frequently praised for his customer service skills.
Academic Excellence at Penn State
Since starting his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at Penn State in the fall of 2021, he has been actively involved with the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Penn State Formula Racing team. These experiences since 2022 have allowed him to apply his classroom learning to real-world engineering projects directly.
During the summer of 2023, he interned at DDS Companies in Rochester, NY, where he utilized AutoCAD to design and plan gas main installation projects, emphasizing applying civil engineering principles in practical scenarios.
Personal Growth and Interests
Traveling to places like Italy, Hawaii, and various major cities across the United States has significantly influenced his growth, enriching his understanding of diverse architectural and urban planning styles. He maintains his health through regular fitness routines and playing golf and actively shares his insights on engineering, travel, and personal development on social media.
Future Vision
Ryan Gustin enthusiastically anticipates graduating from Penn State in May 2025 and commencing his career as a civil engineer. His recent semester at the University of Miami inspired him to pursue opportunities in vibrant urban settings such as Miami or New York.
